Privacy policy
In short: your settings, your shelf and your photos stay on your phone. We have no accounts and never ask who you are.
The app shows one small ad banner on its browsing screens, never while you fold. The ads come from Google AdMob, which collects some data to show and measure them. Where the law asks for your agreement, you choose what Google may do, and you can change it at any time in the app.
To fix problems and see which models people enjoy, the app can send crash reports and anonymous usage statistics through Google Firebase. Both can be switched off in the app; in Europe, usage statistics are off unless you switch them on.
Who we are
Origami is made by Kiqo Lab. For any question about this policy or your data, write to kiqocoding@gmail.com.
What stays on your phone
The app keeps the following on your phone only. We never receive it, and we have no server that could.
- Your settings: language, paper colour, the hand that moves the paper, theme, motion setting.
- Your shelf: models you have saved, started and folded, and the step you reached.
- Photos of your folds that you choose to add. You pick each photo with Android's photo picker (or file chooser); the app sees only that photo, keeps a copy in its private storage, and never uploads it.
All of it is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its data. If you have turned on Android's backup, Android may include it in your phone's backup to your own Google account; that backup is between you and Google, and we can't see it.
Ads
A banner from Google AdMob appears on the home, library and model screens. There are no ads while you fold, no full-screen ads, and nothing is locked behind an ad.
What Google collects
To show ads, measure them and prevent fraud, the Google Mobile Ads SDK in the app may collect:
- your device's advertising ID;
- device information, such as the phone model, Android version and language;
- an approximate location derived from your IP address;
- information about the ads shown and whether you tap them;
- where your phone supports it, Android's own ad features (Privacy Sandbox: ad topics and ad measurement).
Google acts under its own policies: How Google uses information from apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy. We don't receive this data in a form that identifies you.
Your choices
- Europe (EEA), the UK and Switzerland: before ads are personalised, the app asks for your consent with Google's consent message. If you don't consent, Google may still show ads that are not personalised.
- US states with privacy laws (for example California): you can opt out of the sale or sharing of your data for ads.
- You can change your choice at any time in the app: Settings › Privacy choices › Change ad choices.
- On your phone, you can reset or delete your advertising ID, and turn off ad topics, in Android's settings (usually Settings › Privacy › Ads or Settings › Google › Ads).
- You can see and change how Google personalises ads in My Ad Center.
Ads in the app are not aimed at children and are limited to content rated for general audiences with parental guidance (PG).
Crash reports and usage statistics
These go to Google Firebase, which processes them for us under the Firebase data processing terms (see also Privacy and security in Firebase). Neither contains your name, your photos, your contacts or your advertising ID, and neither is used for ads.
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
If the app closes unexpectedly or freezes, it sends a report: what went wrong in the code, the phone model, the Android version, the app version, the model and step that were on screen, and a random ID for this installation of the app. We use them only to fix the problem. Google keeps them for 90 days.
Usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase)
Short notes of what happens in the app: a model was opened, a step reached, a model or a lesson finished, an ad was shown on a screen, and the app's language. With them come the phone model, the Android version, the app version, an approximate location (country and region, from the IP address) and a random ID for this installation of the app. We look only at totals, to see which models people enjoy and where steps are hard.
Your choices
- Europe (EEA), the UK and Switzerland: usage statistics are off unless you switch them on.
- Elsewhere: usage statistics are on, and you can switch them off.
- Crash reports are on, and you can switch them off.
- Both switches are in Settings › Privacy choices. Switching usage statistics off also deletes the app's analytics ID on your phone.
Settings and content updates
When it starts with a connection, the app asks our server (Firebase Hosting and Firebase Remote Config, run by Google) whether there are new or corrected models and whether any of its settings have changed, for example to turn ads off on a screen. To answer, Google's servers see the phone's IP address and, for Remote Config, a random ID for this installation of the app. Nothing about you is sent, and we keep nothing from these requests.
"This step looks wrong"
If you report a step from the player and tap Send, the app sends: the model, the step number, the paper size, the app's language, the app version and the content version. Nothing else, and nothing about you. Reports are stored in Google Cloud Firestore for our project and deleted once the step is checked, within 12 months at most.
What else the app sends
Nothing else. The app has no account and no sign-in. If we add anything, we will update this policy first, and anything that needs your agreement will ask for it in the app.
Children
Origami is meant for people aged 13 and over and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal data through the app, contact us and we will help.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR or US state laws), you have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict the use of your personal data, and to object to its use. We can't link crash reports or usage statistics to you, because they carry only a random ID that the app can reset; switch them off in the app to stop them, and switching usage statistics off deletes that ID. Your app data is on your phone, under your control. For data Google collects for ads, use the choices above or Google's tools. If you have a question or a request, write to us and we will answer within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will publish the new version on this page with a new effective date. Changes that need your agreement will be asked for in the app.
